Peer Support
Peer Specialists are mental health consumers who have received training and demonstrated the skills, motivation and desire to serve as a mentor for other mental health consumers. Peer Specialists are role models with expertise in Recovery; demonstrating appropriate boundaries, communication and recovery skills. Peer Specialists assist with skill development and community resources to promote hope, personal responsibility, empowerment, and self-sufficiency to increase consumers’ successful community integration and recovery.
Training through the Pathways ACCESS Center prepares individuals in the areas needed to serve as mentors to other members of the Pathways ACCESS Center in the role of Member Mentor. Training consists of 18 hours of classes and 100 hours of volunteering in the Pathways ACCESS Center or community.
Additionally, two weeks of Georgia Peer Specialist training, by Dr Ed Knight of Value Options, completes the requirements needed for future employment or volunteering as a Peer Specialist in a variety of mental health services, including Consumer Operated programs.
