Giving Back, AspenPointe Contributes in Multiple Ways to Feed the Children

Posted 12/19/2011

AspenPointe teamed up with the El Paso County Department of Human Services and Springs Church over the weekend, along with several other local organizations, to help an estimated 9,000 El Paso County residents living below the poverty level.

For 7 hours on Saturday, more than a dozen staff members helped turn the Springs Church into an expo area full of goodies, with toys for the little ones, food, face painting, haircuts  and, of course, photos with Saint Nick.

"They've been laid off, their hours have been cut, they're doing the best they can, but they want to have a nice holiday for kids," Rebecca Jacobs with the Department of Human Services told local media.

The case loads at the Department of Human Services have been increasing over the past two years. According to El Paso County officials, 10 percent of the county is on some sort of food assistance, so the Feed the Children event gives those living below the poverty level a sense of relief from the stresses of everyday life.

AspenPointe has contributed to the event for multiple years.

“Our organization was founded in 1875 as the Colorado Springs Relief Society, giving necessities to the community’s less fortunate,” said AspenPointe President and CEO Morris L. Roth. “So, we’re very thankful to be in a position to still lend a helping hand to those in Colorado Springs who need it.

“But it’s very inspiring to see so many of our staff step up on their own to donate toys and give up a Saturday.”

In addition to helping out on Saturday, AspenPointe was a major sponsor of the event, purchasing a semi-truck loaded with food, toiletries, books, etc., that were handed out Saturday. It also hosted a highly successful internal toy drive collecting new, non-gift wrapped toys.

Since 1875...

AspenPointe has empowered clients, enriched lives and embraced purpose through behavioral health services, counseling services, career services, substance abuse treatment, employment, education, housing, jail diversion/reintegration and care management.

One of the largest nonprofits in Colorado Springs, AspenPointe traces its roots back to 1875 when we were called the Springs Relief Society. That organization, which delivered coal, lumber and clothing to the needy, was the genesis of what today is a comprehensive and integrated system of care that addresses the overall wellness of each client whether they need behavioral health services, counseling services or career services.

We have 12 organizations that serve more than 30,000 individuals and families each year through behavioral health services, counseling services, career services, education, housing, jail diversion/reintegration, telephonic wellness and care management.

We collaborate with clergy, educators, employers, other health and human service agencies, the legal/criminal justice system, other behavioral health providers, insurers, and many other organizations to leverage our collective resources in order to better our communities and the lives of its residents.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded largely by Medicaid, state and federal grants, local government contracts, and generous donations.
