With the current season of Dancing with the Stars approaching its highly-anticipated finale, AspenPointe is excited to announce the 2013 Heroes of Mental Health Luncheon keynote speaker will be J.R. Martinez.

The Annual Heroes of Mental Health Luncheon, which takes place in October, recognizes an individual in Colorado Springs who champions health and wellness. They are a driving force in efforts to reduce stigma while assisting in growth of programs that treat mental illness, substance abuse, unemployment, and homelessness.

Martinez, the season 13 champion of Dancing with the Stars, is widely known for his acting, motivational speaking, and service in the Army as a combat veteran.

“J.R. Martinez is an outstanding example of someone who has successfully overcome adversity," said Morris Roth, AspenPointe President and CEO. “We believe his story of hope and resilience will resonate deeply with our clients and community members, and we are thrilled to have him as our keynote.”

In 2003, while deployed to Iraq, Martinez was severely burned after the Humvee he was driving hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). He began providing support to fellow burn survivors while being treated for his injuries. It was then that he understood the impact he had on fellow patients and decided to use his experience to help others. He continued to visit patients, sharing his story and listening to theirs.

Martinez dedicates himself to showing others the importance of making the best of every situation, and has proven to be an excellent source of optimism for wounded service members. He has become a highly sought- after motivational speaker and he travels the country spreading his message of hope and resilience to inspire people to just keep dancing.

The nomination window for this year’s Hero of Mental Health opens next month. Visit www.aspenpointe.org for more details. Proceeds from the luncheon benefit key AspenPointe community initiatives.

Since 1875...

AspenPointe has empowered clients, enriched lives and embraced purpose through behavioral health services, counseling services, career services, substance abuse treatment, employment, education, housing, jail diversion/reintegration and care management.

One of the largest nonprofits in Colorado Springs, AspenPointe traces its roots back to 1875 when we were called the Springs Relief Society. That organization, which delivered coal, lumber and clothing to the needy, was the genesis of what today is a comprehensive and integrated system of care that addresses the overall wellness of each client whether they need behavioral health services, counseling services or career services.

We have 12 organizations that serve more than 30,000 individuals and families each year through behavioral health services, counseling services, career services, education, housing, jail diversion/reintegration, telephonic wellness and care management.

We collaborate with clergy, educators, employers, other health and human service agencies, the legal/criminal justice system, other behavioral health providers, insurers, and many other organizations to leverage our collective resources in order to better our communities and the lives of its residents.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded largely by Medicaid, state and federal grants, local government contracts, and generous donations.
